Matt Kelly, editor of Compliance Week, believes that companies’ experience with Sarbanes-Oxley have made them very wary of any new initiatives coming out of the SEC (see http://hitachidatainteractive.com/2008/04/21/xbrl-the-long-and-winding-road/ ). Thus he predicts a “rocky road” ahead for an XBRL mandate. I hope the process goes a lot smoother than he anticipates. By nearly all accounts, the costs of XBRL adoption shouldn’t begin to approach those of SOX, and there’s no reason why interactive data should bear the burden of CFOs’ punishing experience with that law.

[...] Christian Gross, InvestorGeeks.com: On Friday April 18, 2007, I had the chance to participate in a conference call with the SEC on the topic of XBRL. In short, this is about the SEC computerizing SEC data. This means that when you want to calculate a valuation you just need to talk to a web service and it will provide you the information. I am in awe! This is wonderful. How often I’ve had to punch in the numbers by hand to calculate the valuation of a company. With this web service, however, I can query and ask for the details of a publicly traded company. [...]
