[...] For the past little while I have kept a closer eye on energy. So I am thinking that maybe I should create a regular blog column about energy? If you like my previous blog entry at Investor Geeks, and liked my other articles regarding energy, please tell. And if you are interested, tell me what you would like me to keep an eye on and what questions should be answered. In a previous blog entry I talked about the price of oil. A couple of days ago I was watching Boone Pickens on CNBC. He was commenting on what direction oil will take, and in his words, “I think you’ll see $70 before you see $50.” This was the same individual that said, “80 before 60.” History has shown that oil did not reach 80, even though it was only a few dimes away from 80. I am going to cut Boone some slack in that oil did reach 80 before 60, but I will take Boone to task in that he was also saying oil would reach 100 USD. [...]

I am going to comment on this in my next-next blog entry.

In short I don't completely agree with you and I will explain why.

Good analysis, but you forgot something important.

what happens when the dollar is devalued another 20% and oil companies demand payments in euros?

it might not affect world oil prices but it will affect US prices. I'm betting on higher oil and gas prices. i think oil will go back up to $75/bbl within next 12 months.

Bill:

Ugh... My first article and you ask, "Should I hold or sell?" I guess it is a fair question. After all if I write an article and give advice I should be able to back it up, no? Ok, first disclaimer! I am not a professional! So take my comments and advice with a grain of salt, and I am not liable, ok?

Now to answer your question, should you sell? I looked at your fund in detail, and while I share your pain! And I do! I would be hesistant to sell for the following reasons:

1) You have a fund and funds are long term things. I would not sell your fund until you have lost 25% or so. Funds do swing back and forth.

2) I looked at the holdings of the fund and would be very hesistant to sell. The ten biggest holdings of the fund seem like duds! Yet look at the complete holdings of the fund and I have to say they are good.

3) I like the fund holdings of Canadian, and Brazilian companies. These two countries are the diamonds in the rough. As countries become uglier and uglier to deal with Canada and Brazil will become more and more attractive.

4) I also notice the funds has holdings in some Russian companies. You want to watch this, not for bad, but for good. Europe is Russia's biggest client, and they pay money. My brother who works in Russia and Eastern Europe is extremely bullish.

Here is what I would do (again take it with a grain of salt). Hold onto the fund until next summer if you can bear the pain. By then things should have been shaken out and there will be some clear guidance.

I bought $25,000 worth of Vanguard Energy Fund back in April. It is down to about $23,500. Given your view about the future of oil prices, would you sell even though I would have to pay a 1% redemption fee?
