Great article, Dan. I'm always conscious of the fact that I need to socialize with the younger generations more (I seem to have no trouble finding older people to talk to).

One reason I feel this way is that I think knowing kids in their teens, kids in elementary school, and kids in pre-school will give me perspective when raising my own family.

The other reason is business related. It's really the 18-30 year olds who compose the majority of MySpace and Facebook users (that consumer segment we love to target). But if I wanted to get a jump on the next big thing, I'd pay attention to what younger kids are up to. Where do the 12-16 year olds hang out? What kinds of things do they wish they could buy but won't be able to until they're older?
